In honor of International Women’s Day 2025, we are thrilled to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible contributions of 30 Pacific women leaders.
This is our way of saying “thank you” and shining a light on their strength, resilience, and leadership.

“Malaemie “Mal” Fruean is a distinguished community leader and advocate for Pacific communities in New South Wales, Australia. Born in Whangārei, New Zealand, she has dedicated her life to supporting and empowering Pacific peoples through various leadership roles and initiatives.

In 2021, Mal was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of her outstanding service to the Pacific communities of New South Wales. She has been a pivotal figure in the New South Wales Council for Pacific Communities (NSWCPC), serving as Chairperson since 2014 and being a founding member since 2003.

Under her leadership, the NSWCPC has initiated programs and events aimed at celebrating Pacific cultures and addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities.

Beyond her work with the NSWCPC, Mal manages the South West Multicultural and Community Centre in Minto, where she continues her commitment to community service. Her dedication extends to her role as a member of the Pacific Cultural Collection Advisory Panel at the Australian Museum, ensuring the representation and preservation of Pacific cultural heritage.

Mal is also a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and mentor, embodying the values of family and community in all aspects of her life. Her relentless advocacy and support have made a lasting impact on the Pacific communities in New South Wales, earning her widespread respect and admiration”
